HARD ANODIZING OF
2XXX SERIES OF ALUMINUM ALLOYS

William W. Corcoran, Sanford Process Corporation
Leonid M. Lerner, Sanford Process Corporation

It is generally understood that 2xxx series aluminum alloys do not accept anodic coating well, that the coating is unattractive, prone to catastrophic dissolution, poor in abrasion resistance and inconsistent in results achievable. Our study was designed to identify different processes available for successful hardcoating of 2xxx series aluminum alloys. In our study we employed two different power supplies and four different processes. All samples that were processes were 4"x4" squares of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy. The same amount of Ampere-Minutes was used in each process run.
